Mission II occurs between September 27 and November 1 in the districts of Díli, Liquiçá and Ermera. Its main intention is to collect data that enables one to accomplish the following objectives:

  • identify and characterise changes in Timorese teachers’ conceptions of teaching;
  • identify and characterise changes in Timorese teachers’ practices;
  • characterise Timorese teachers’ initial knowledge about the new curriculum of secondary education;
  • evaluate the short-term impact of the restructuring of the secondary education in East Timor in students’ conceptions of learning and in their study habits;
  • understand the role that Timorese teachers attach to pedagogical resources, such as the textbook and the teacher’s guide;
  • understand how Timorese teachers use the teacher’s guide to prepare teaching and learning strategies;
  • evaluate the initial impact of the restructuring of secondary education on the functioning of schools;
  • design and develop a long-term impact evaluation research plan.

Gather collection techniques include (i) documentary analysis, (ii) non participant direct observation, (iii) inquiry (questionnaire, interview and focus group). Data collection instruments can be accessed here.

Participants:

  • Macro level – two Directors of a National Educational Directory;
  • Micro level – 12 Timorese trainers; 135 teachers and 277 students from 9 schools – 5 public and 4 private.
