mission I

Mission I occurs between May 1 and June 14 in the districts of Díli, Liquiçá and Ermera. Its main intention is to collect data that enables one to accomplish the following objectives:

  • describe how teacher training on the new curriculum is being implemented;
  • characterise the conditions under which the new secondary education curriculum is being implemented;
  • characterise the kind of teaching, learning and assessment strategies that are adopted by Timorese teachers;
  • understand how the Timorese teachers are making use of the new curriculum and of the subject textbooks and the teacher’s guides;
  • understand how the Timorese students are making use of the subject textbooks;
  • identify the main strengths/weaknesses that Timorese teachers and students find in this innovative curriculum.

Gather collection techniques include (i) documentary analysis, (ii) non participant direct observation, (iii) inquiry (questionnaire, interview and focus group). Data collection instruments can be accessed here.

Participants:

  • Macro level – Director of a National Educational Directory and one of his Advisors; a former Director of the same Directory and his Advisor; a fomer Ministry of Education;
  • Meso level – 3 members of two School Director’s Office, one public and one private;
  • Micro level – 11 Timorese trainers and 11 Portuguese trainers; 194 teachers from 20 schools – 14 public and 6 private; 480 students from 9 schools – 5 public and 4 private.
